Public sector strike

Members of the public sector union, UNISON, have voted overwhelmingly in favour of industrial action planned for 30th November 2011.

The planned strike is in protest against cuts to public sector pensions. Workers in local government, education, the health service, police and the courts service, and many other public sector workers will down tools on 30th November.

UNISON President, Eleanor Smith, speaking at the union's national disabled members conference on 6th November, told members "I cannot tell you how proud I am to be president of the union at this time ... a time when teaching assistants, nurses, paramedics, cleaners and lollipop ladies are prepared to stand up and say enough is enough."

The 'day of action' is being co-ordinated by the TUC and many other unions are expected take part in the action, including teachers' unions.
